Radon Scientists Test Certification Updated


The National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) and the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (AARST) have announced that the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP), a national professional certification program that has been jointly administered by both organizations in partnership since 2005, is solely operated and administered by AARST. AARST has assumed all legal responsibilities of the NRPP on that date.
The NRPP’s underlying policies, procedures and process of credentialing radon professionals will not change, and the services provided to the program’s participants, state radon programs and training partners will be sustained.
The certification program is known as the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) in the United States, and the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP) in Canada.
Updating of all credential identification will occur over the next 12 months and for a limited time it is expected that some references to the NRPP will clearly state that a name change has occurred, ex: NRPP formerly known as NEHA-NRPP. AARST, as part of its annual compliance with its state of incorporation, New Jersey, officially registered and operated the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) as a d/b/a when it acquired the certification program from PCI in 2005.
In assuming full stewardship of the NRPP, AARST will be bringing additional resources to bear on continued development of American National Standards (ANSI) for radon professionals and the public. AARST points to ongoing, successful efforts to create consensus standards for multi-family housing, radon resistant new construction codes, device definition and calibration standards.

Bacteria Associated with ERMI Home Mold Levels

Bacterial contamination in water-damaged buildings has been identified as a potential cause of health problems, including infection and respiratory conditions like asthma. Which specific bacteria contribute to these problems, however, has been unknownmaking it difficult for public health officials to develop tools to effectively address the underlying source of the problem.
In a new study, a University of Cincinnati (UC) environmental health research team found evidence linking two specific strains of bacteriaStenotrophomonas and Mycobacteriumto indoor mold from water damage. The research is part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's investment in research to protect the health of children from hazards in the home.
"If we are going to understand the role of indoor bacteria in human health, we must be able to identify and quantify the relevant bacterial species contributing to the health problems," says Atin Adhikari, PhD, assistant professor of environmental health at the UC College of Medicine and principal investigator of the study.
"The association between bacterial contamination and respiratory health has lagged behind mold studies because it is difficult to determine which species of bacteria are growing in homes and most of the bacterial species are non-culturable and not identified yet," adds Adhikari. "These new data will help us more accurately target and combat the bacteria and to explore synergistic health effects of bacteria and molds growing in water damaged homes."
The UC-based team will report its findings at the American Society for Microbiology meeting in San Francisco.
For this study, Adhikari and UC postdoctoral fellow Eric Kettleson, PhD, analyzed samples collected from 42 homes from the Cincinnati Childhood Allergy and Air Pollution Study, a National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences-funded project examining the long-term effects of environmental exposures on respiratory health and allergy development in children.
Included homes fell into one of two categories"high mold" or "low mold"based on previously reported environmental relative moldiness index (ERMI), a DNA-based mold level analysis tool developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that combines results of the analysis of 36 different types of mold into one index to describe a home's cumulative mold burden.
The team then compared the ERMI values and types of bacteria found in both high- and low-mold homes in an effort to better understand the environmental sources and home characteristics that influence indoor bacterial contamination.
They found strong correlations between Mycobacterium and visible mold and also between Stenotrophomonas and environmental relative moldiness index.
"Stenotrophomonas maltophiliaan emerging multidrug-resistant global opportunistic pathogenwas isolated from numerous environmental sources. Surprisingly, it was never assessed quantitatively in indoor home environments especially in water damaged homes where this can be a real concern and may cause inhalation exposure risks to occupants. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is the first bacterial species associated with higher ERMI values in homes," adds Kettleson.

10 Myths About Radon in Your Home


The EPA debunks 10 myths about radon

January is National Radon Action month and theEnvironmental Protection Agency is asking homeowners to “save a life” by testing for radon and fixing any problems they find. Radon is a radioactive gas and exposure to it causes 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year—only smoking causes more. Because you can't see, smell or taste radon, it’s important to periodically test the air in your home. Believing you live in a region not affected by radon is just one of the myths about this deadly gas. Here are the EPA’s top 10.
Myth 1: Scientists are not sure that radon really is a problem.
Fact: Although some scientists dispute the precise number of deaths due to radon, all the major health organizations (like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Lung Association and the American Medical Association) agree with estimates that radon causes thousands of preventable lung cancer deaths every year. This is especially true among smokers, since the risk to smokers is much greater than to non-smokers.
Myth 2: Radon testing is difficult, time-consuming and expensive.
Fact: Radon testing is easy. You can test your home yourself or hire a qualified radon test company. Either approach takes only a small amount of time and effort. In Consumer Reports tests of radon kits, we found that long-term tests, which take readings for at least 90 days, are more accurate than short-term kits.
Myth 3: Homes with radon problems can't be fixed.
Fact: There are simple solutions to radon problems in homes. Thousands of homeowners have already fixed radon problems. Most homes can be fixed for about the same cost as other common home repairs. Call your state radon office for help in identifying qualified mitigation contractors.
Myth 4: Radon affects only certain kinds of homes.
Fact: Radon can be a problem in homes of all types: old homes, new homes, drafty homes, insulated homes, homes with basements, and homes without basements. Local geology, construction materials, and how the home was built are among the factors that can affect radon levels in homes.
Myth 5: Radon is only a problem in certain parts of the country.
Fact: High radon levels have been found in every state. Radon problems do vary from area to area, but the only way to know your radon level is to test.
Myth 6: A neighbor's test result is a good indication of whether you have a problem.
Fact: It's not. Radon levels can vary greatly from home to home. The only way to know if your home has a radon problem is to test it.
Myth 7: Everyone should test their water for radon.
Fact: While radon gets into some homes through water, it is important to first test the air in the home for radon. If your water comes from a public water supply that uses ground water, call your water supplier. If high radon levels are found and the home has a private well, call the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791 for information on testing your water.
Myth 8: It's difficult to sell homes where radon problems have been discovered.
Fact: Where radon problems have been fixed, home sales have not been blocked or frustrated. The added protection is sometimes a good selling point.
Myth 9: I've lived in my home for so long, it doesn't make sense to take action now.
Fact: You will reduce your risk of lung cancer when you reduce radon levels, even if you've lived with an elevated radon level for a long time.
Myth 10: Short-term tests can't be used for making a decision about whether to fix your home.
Fact: Short-term tests can be used to decide whether to reduce a home's high radon levels. However, the closer the short-term testing result is to 4 pCi/L (pico Curies per Liter), the less certainty there is about whether the home's year-round average is above or below that level. Keep in mind that radon levels below 4 pCi/L still pose some risk and that radon levels can be reduced to 2 pCi/L or below in most homes.

GE Recalls Dishwashers Due to Fire Hazard WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Name of product: GE, GE Adora™, GE Eterna™, GE Profile™ and Hotpoint®, Dishwashers Units: About 1.3 million in the United States Manufacturer: GE Appliances, of Louisville, Ky. Hazard: An electrical failure in the dishwasher's heating element can pose a fire hazard. Incidents/Injuries: GE has received 15 reports of dishwasher heating element failures, including seven reports of fires, three of which caused extensive property damage. No injuries have been reported. Description: This recall involves GE, GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile and Hotpoint brand dishwashers. They were sold in black, white, bisque, stainless steel and CleanSteel™ exterior colors and finishes. Radon Standard for Multifamily Homes

AARST President William Angell announced that the AARST Consortium on National Radon Standards has released and published the long awaited American National Stanard on Protocols for Conducting Radon and Radon Decay Measurements in Multifamily Buildings. (MAMF-2010)

The recently approved ANSI-AARST radon standard provides specific protocols that include instructions on where to test, strategies for conducting reliable tests, and the reporting and associated quality control measurement technigues for testing radon in multi-family buildings.

This is the first consensus standard promulgated as an ANSI consensus standard by the AARST Consortium on National Radon Standards.

The consortium is an independent entity within AARST (with a separate Executive Stakeholders Commitee chaired by Gary Hodgden) that has been accredited as an ANSI Standards Developer. The consortium is working on a number of standards related to radon measurement and mitigation.

Bill and Shawn Price (Chair of the Standards Management Committee) thanked the Multifamily Committe Chair, Trudy Smith and members of the standards writing committee for their hard work in producing this much needed consensus standard for multi-family dwellings.

What is radon?
Radon is a chemically inert, naturally occurring, radioactive gas. It has no smell, colour, or taste, and is produced from the natural radioactive decay of uranium which is found in rocks and soil.

Radon gas escapes easily from rocks and soils into the air and tends to concentrate in enclosed spaces, such as underground mines, houses, and other buildings.

Soil gas infiltration is recognized as the most important source of residential radon. Other sources of radon include building materials and water extracted from wells, but are of less importance.

Is radon harmful?

Exposure to radon in the home and workplace is one of the main risks of ionizing radiation causing tens of thousands of deaths from lung cancer each year globally. In order to reduce this burden it is important that national authorities have methods and tools based on solid scientific evidence and sound public health policy. The public needs to be aware of radon risks and the means to reduce and prevent these.

Recent findings from case-control studies on lung cancer and exposure to radon in homes completed in many countries allow for substantial improvement in risk estimates and for further consolidation of knowledge by pooling data from these studies. The consistency of the findings from the latest pooled analyses of case-control studies from Europe and North America as well as China provides a strong argument for an international initiative to reduce indoor radon risks.

The International Radon Project (IRP)

WHO has formed a network of key partner agencies from over 40 Member States. This network is the basis for the WHO International Radon Project (IRP) which was launched in 2005. Working groups collect and analyse information on radon risk, radon policies, radon mitigation and prevention as well as radon risk communication.

The key elements of the International Radon Project include:

developing evidence-based public health guidance for Member States to formulate policy and advocacy strategy including the establishment of radon levels;
provision of guidance on methods for radon measurements and mitigation;
development of approaches for radon risk communication.
WHO handbook on indoor radon - a public health perspective

The WHO handbook on indoor radon is a key product of the WHO International Radon Project. This handbook book focuses on residential radon exposure from a public health point of view and provides detailed recommendations on reducing health risks from radon and sound policy options for preventing and mitigating radon exposure.

This publication is intended for countries planning to develop their national radon programmes or extend such activities, as well as for stakeholders involved in radon control such as the construction industry and building professionals.
